His areas of focus are commercial dispute resolution, corporate mergers and acquisition, private equity and capital markets. He is focused on expanding his horizons and becoming one of the most sought-after lawyers in the country.

Nelson has a wealth of experience in corporate services covering aspects such as corporate secretarial work, company law advisory, corporate governance, compliance and capital markets regulation. In addition, he has acquired significant litigation experience where he has worked on a wide spectrum of commercial disputes before various courts and tribunals, including assisting in matters before the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

Being an ardent reader and writer, Nelson has authored numerous articles, including in the Business Daily, on a wide array of legal topics. He has a bias towards corporate law and governance and most recently wrote on the Capital Markets Authority’s proposal to introduce special purpose acquisition vehicles (SPACs) in Kenya. He has also published on private equity, employment law, regulatory compliance, pension funds and asset management.

Nelson Karumba is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Kenyatta University School of Law.  He is currently pursuing his qualifications as a Company Secretary.

EXPERIENCE

  • Part of the litigation teams that represented two pension schemes in recovery actions for funds invested in the collapsed Chase Bank and Imperial Bank corporate bonds of KES 10 Billion and KES 2 Billion.
  • Participated in the governance audit of a leading Nairobi Securities Exchange listed manufacturing group operating in plastics, cosmetics and trading.
  • Part of the governance audit team that conducted a governance audit of an agricultural oriented company focused on coffee growing listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
  • Participated in the governance audits of two (2) listed financial services groups with a key focus on transparency and disclosure, compliance with laws & regulations and stakeholder engagement.
  • Acted as lead associate in the legal compliance audit of an independent trust dedicated towards the achievement of financial inclusivity.
  • Prepared Capital Markets Authority (CMA) compliance matrices on behalf of various listed companies.
